Xochimilco
Beyond the Trajinera
The floating gardens that fed an empire, explored the way most visitors never get to see them.
Overview
Most people see Xochimilco as party boats and mariachis. And honestly — that version exists and it's fun. But Dr. Fernanda Reyna takes you somewhere different. As a visual artist and researcher specializing in eco-aesthetics, she sees Xochimilco the way most people never do — as a UNESCO World Heritage Site still actively feeding Mexico City, a living ecosystem built by the Aztecs and somehow still standing, and a neighborhood with stories in every canal.
What to Expect
The Experience Flow
Where it begins
Before the water, there's the church. San Bernardino de Siena has been standing in the heart of Xochimilco since the 1500s. Fernanda starts here because context matters — you'll understand everything that follows a little differently once you know where you are.
The market
The Xochimilco market is the kind of place you could spend an entire morning in without meaning to. Flowers stacked taller than you, local food on every corner, traditional drinks you've probably never tried. Grab breakfast if you're hungry. Grab something for the boat either way.
On the trajinera
This is the one. You board your private trajinera and head into the canals — and suddenly Mexico City feels like a completely different place. Fernanda walks you through the chinampas, the floating gardens the Aztecs built centuries ago that are somehow still feeding the city today. Mariachis might drift past. You might step off onto a chinampa. The route moves with the group.
The island, if you dare
La Isla de las Muñecas. The Island of the Dolls. Fernanda will tell you the story behind it — and it's not the one you've read online. Whether you want to get close is entirely up to you.
